위의 주제를 이야기할 때 빠지지 않는 채소가 있다. 바로 특별한 향도 없고 맛도 강하지 않은 토마토다.

토마토는 샐러드, 샌드위치, 파스타, 주스 심지어 설탕을 뿌려서 간식으로도 즐겨 먹는 등

우리의 식생활과 가까운 식품이 됐다.

 

1. 토마토는 냉장 보관하지 않는 게 좋다.

Tomatoes do not belong in the refrigerator.

냉장고의 차가운 공기는 토마토 숙성과정을 방해할 뿐 아니라 세포막을 손상한다.

 

 

The cold air in the fridge stops the tomato from ripening, and ripening is what gives tomatoes more flavor

 

2. 토마토는 피부미용에 좋다.

You can use tomatoes for skin care.

산성이 높은 토마토를 갈아서 얼굴에 바르면 반점 등을 제거할 수 있다.

특히 지성 피부를 가진 사람에겐 토마토 팩이 도움이 될 것이다.

 

 

Thanks to the acid in tomatoes, you can use tomato pulp to clear up blemishes, apparently! Applying some tomato pulp to your face can also help diminish oily skin. (Too bad we just want to eat all the tomatoes and not use them for beauty treatments.)

 

3. 오래전 사람들은 토마토에 독이 있다고 믿었다

People used to believe tomatoes were poisonous.

1700년대에 귀족들이 토마토를 먹고 병을 앓다가 죽는 것을 본 사람들은 토마토에 독이 있다고 믿었다.

심지어 토마토를 ‘독 사과’라고 부르기도 했다. 그러나 병의 원인은 토마토를 담은 백랍접시였다.

토마토의 산성 때문에 접시의 납 성분을 토마토가 흡수해서 납중독을 일으킨 것이었다.

According to Smithsonian Magazine, in the 1700s, some Europeans feared the tomato because aristocrats were getting sick after eating them, and in some cases even dying. The tomato even earned the nickname the "poisonous apple." The problem wasn't the tomatoes, however, but the pewter plates on which the tomatoes were served. Tomatoes are high in acid, which makes them potentially hazardous when they come in contact with heavy metals and pewter.

 

4. 세계에서 토마토를 가장 많이 재배하는 나라는 중국이다.

China is the world's largest producer of tomatoes.

미국은 토마토 재배 2위다. 중국 요리에 토마토가 많이 들어가는 것도 아닐 텐데....의아할 것이다.

실제 중국에서 재배하는 대부분의 토마토는 수출되며 일부는 토마토 페이스트로 보관된다.

 

The U.S. is second. Given that tomatoes do not factor heavily into Chinese cuisine, we find this confusing too. China exports much of its crop and also processes a lot of it into products like tomato paste.

 

5. 미국 내에서는 캘리포니아가 토마토 재배 1위다.

In the U.S., California grows the most tomatoes.

토마토의 1/3과 가공 토마토 제품의 96%가 캘리포니아에서 생산된다.

Americans eat about 23 pounds of tomatoes each year.

You can call it "wolf peach."

토마토의 과학 명 Lycopersicon lycopersicum을 그대로 번역하면 '늑대 복숭아'다.

 

 

8. 토마토는 안데스 산맥에서 유래했다.

Tomatoes originated in the Andes.

이태리 요리에 토마토가 많이 들어가니 이태리가 발생지라고 생각할 수 있다.

토마토는 아즈텍 족과 잉카 족이 가장 처음 재배했다고 한다. 그것도 약 2,700년 전에.

 

 

No, tomatoes are not from Italy. They were first cultivated by the Aztecs and Incas, dating back as early as 700 AD.

 

9. 초기의 토마토는 빨간색이 아니었다.

And the first variety wasn't red.

초기의 토마토는 작고 노란색이었다. 그래서 유럽에서는 초기에 토마토를 porni d'oro(노란 사과)라고 불렀다.

 

 

The first tomatoes were small and yellow, which likely explains the Italian word given to them when they were brought to Europe: pomi d'oro, which translates to yellow apples.

There are about 10,000 varieties of tomatoes across the globe.

토마토의 종류가 이렇게 많은 지 몰랐을 거다. 게다가 재미있는 이름을 가진 토마토 종류도 있다.

아기 케이크, 바나나 다리, 크림 소시지, 그렘린, 즐거운난쟁이, 그리고 미스터 못난이 라는 토마토도 있다고 한다.

 

 

That's a lot of different kinds of tomatoes. So you better start eating now. Some of the more fun names include Baby Cakes, Banana Legs, Cream Sausage, Gremlin, Jolly Elf and Mr. Ugly.

 

11. 토마토는 과일인가? 아니면 채소인가?

Tomatoes are really a fruit, but... they can also be called a vegetable.

식물학적으로 토마토 열매가 과일인 것이 맞다.

하지만 1893년에 미국 대법원은 '평민의 용어' 차원에서 토마토를 채소로 판결했다.

당시 미국에선 토마토에 채소에만 붙는 수입관세를 매기려는 의도가 있었다고 한다.

관세법은 이미 오랜 전에 없어졌지만, 과일인지 채소인지에 대한 대법원의 판결은 아직도 유효하다.

사실 토마토가 채소이든 과일이든 큰 상관은 없다. 여전히 우리는 토마토를 맛있게 먹고 있으니 말이다.

 

 

Wait a minute. Didn't we just clear this matter up: tomatoes are fruits, right? Yes, botanically speaking, tomatoes are fruits. But in 1893, the Supreme Court ruled that tomatoes could also be called vegetables. In "the common language of the people," a tomato is a vegetable, which at the time of the case, meant that the Tariff Act, which taxed important vegetables, could legally apply to tomatoes. The government abandoned the Tariff of 1833, but the legal opinion still stands. You say tomato, I say tomato.
